Foreword
The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources - IBAMA, within the scope of its institutional mission of encouraging the correct techniques of intervention in nature, such as the management of forests in the Brazil, makes available, with this database, an important data basis. It is designed to be used by the forest industry and society in general, to help divulge Brazilian woods in both domestic and international markets. This database will encourage the commercialization of those species not well known in the market and allow forest management to be carried out with a greater number of species. This fact will increase the economic viability and, hopefully, greater utilization of sustainable forest management.
The Forest Products Laboratory - LPF was in charge of gathering the data presented in this database as well as publishing it. The Laboratory's concern was to conceive an attractive format with an easily comprehensible content, to enable a practical and enjoyable read. The use of the wood, based on technical indexes and on the knowledge of the real possibilities of use, will automatically add value to its products.
This database also clearly demonstrates that the cooperation between society and government is profitable and may be better implemented. This database was prepared in collaboration with forest industry associations that participated in the selection of species and helped with the photographic documentation of trees and logs in the Brazilian Regions. The improvement of such partnerships between research and private companies, government and society and government and productive sectors, will not only increase the social economic standard of the Country but also strengthen the integration of the several segments of society.
